Obama Spreads Grandma’s Ashes-Breaks Law

Media people were not allowed to accompany Obama, his sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng, her husband, and Obama¹s immediate family of wife Michelle and daughters Sasha and Malia as they picked their way down to Länaçi Lookout and its wave-swept, rocky shoreline Tuesday afternoon.
Obama scattered the ashes of his mother, Stanley Ann Dunham, at the same location after she died of cancer at the age of 53. During a family vacation in August, Obama returned to Länaçi Lookout to toss a lei into the ocean in memory of his mother.

He should have looked into the regulations surrounding spreading ashes…that’s against the law, he needed to be at least 3 nautical miles from land:

Quote:
Disposal location and measures – Cremated remains

Cremated remains shall be buried in or on ocean waters without regard to the depth limitations specified for non-cremated remains in paragraph 2 above provided that such burial takes place at least three nautical miles from land.

According to the HI Dept. of Land and Natural Resources, throwing a lei is also a no-no!

Quote:
We suggest that loose flowers be scattered instead of leis, as marine animals could become sick from eating the strings of the leis.

Länaçi Lookout is part of a national park which, under a blanket federal law, allows for the spreading of ashes.

Generally speaking, no environmental permit is required for scattering of cremated ashes on land, sea or from the air from the Department of Health, but this should be done discreetly and some distance away from the general public. Ashes may not be dispersed within a state forest reserve or watershed area, nor on state or federal property. Scattering on private property should be done with permission of the owner. For information call the Department of Health, Current Registration Section, at 586-4540.
