It is illegal to enter the country without inspection and without possesion of the proper visa. It is illegal to be in the country and holding a job. But the federal government actually doesn't prohibit illegal immigrants from living in public housing. It's yet another example of the divergent ways in which the government treats undocumented residents. No, you can't get Medicaid, but you can qualify for in-state college tuition. No, you can't get a driver's license, but you can live in public housing. No, there are some benefits you can't get but if any member of your household is a citizen (i.e., anchor baby) you qualify. What the federal government should make clear, through both legislation and actions is this...if you are in the U.S. illegally, everything you do and participate in is illegal activity by virtue of you illegal presence.
