I’m writing about the union card check proposal. I’m a fervent advocate of secret ballots, partly because I have been subjected to retaliation for votes I’ve made in the workplace. Disingenuous arguments aside, the card check proposal does away with the secret ballot for unionization. Some of the arguments about the need for a change in the current system may have merit, but doing away with the secret ballot is not the answer.

Given Ms. Solis' appointment, alternatives need to be offered to card check. My proposal: simply require firms of a certain size to conduct an up or down vote (by secret ballot) on unionization every so often (e.g., every 3 or every 5 years). This vote would be required regardless of whether it is currently unionized or not. By mandating a vote at particular times, most of the arguments I’ve heard for card check get dealt with in a fair way without doing away with the secret ballot.
