Free Roxana Saberi!
Roxana Saberi turned age 32 today, most of you by now probably have heard of Saberi, who is an American journalist of Iranian and Japanese descent who was arrested in February 2009, and is being held in Iran on charges of espionage, which her lawyer and the U.S. Dept. of State call baseless. Saberi is a freelance journalist who moved to Iran six years ago, and reports for NPR, the BBC, and other news organizations. Roxana Saberi grew up in Fargo, N.D., and is the daughter of Reza Saberi, and Akiko Saberi. She was chosen Miss North Dakota in 1997 and was among the top ten finalists in Miss America 1998.
She graduated from Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn., with degrees in communication and French. In Iran, after she was “captured”, she had an hour-long trial and Saberi was sentenced to *8* years in prison bars for “espionage.” Originally Saberi was told she was being arrested for buying bootleg wine, then the Iranians changed it to “working as a journalist without a license”. Roxana Saberi is now on her 5th day of a hunger strike and one of her defense lawyers was denied access to her! Something has to be done! I personally don’t care what side of the political spectrum you are on, make sure you keep up to date with Roxana Saberi and the Free Roxana Saberi website. The website also has info on what you can do to try and pressure the Iranians for her safe release.
