Another nail in her coffin – Blanche Lincoln will vote for cloture on jobs bill aka Stimulus 2.0
Despite Sen. Blanche Lincoln’s criticisms of Porkulus 2.0 aka the new $15 billion “jobs bill”, she will still vote for cloture on the bill, as she continues to seal her fate for the November 2010 election. According to Politico, her announcement Friday afternoon is an indicator that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) is succeeding in holding key Democrats together to support a scaled-back $15 billion measure he announced last week.
“I do not think Arkansans want us to stop at a ‘slimmed down’ effort to put people back to work,” Lincoln said in her statement. “Sen. Reid’s alternative does contain provisions I support, but I see no reason we cannot move forward on the Baucus-Grassley measure, which does more.”
To break the filibuster, though, Reid still needs to secure at least two Republican votes.
Jim Manley, the majority leader’s spokesman, said that a cloture vote is still scheduled for Monday despite an announcement Friday afternoon that stomach cancer will prevent Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.) from returning in time to vote.
Lincoln supports each of the four key provisions in Reid’s bill, but she and Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) released a letter Friday calling on Reid to reconsider his rejection of the bipartisan compromise agreed to by Sen. Max Baucus (D-Mont.) and Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa).
Reid has spoken with Sen. Scott Brown (R-Mass.) and other Republicans to try to win their votes, but Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has applied pressure to prevent Republican defections.
