Israeli tanks entering the Gaza Strip

israel-flagAccording to Sky News, Israeli tanks have entered the Gaza Strip firing main guns after two Israeli soldiers died in a Palestinian ambush. Five tanks and two armored bulldozers entered Gaza shelling targets near the town of Khan Younis, in the centre of the narrow coastal enclave. The Israeli action comes near the site of the worst clash with Palestinian fighters in 14 months, which killed two on each side. Surely Obama will be pissed off about the news of this. Too bad!

Palestinian sources confirmed more casualties in the fresh fighting while Israeli helicopters and unmanned military drones circled above.

The Gaza-based militant group Popular Resistance Committees confirmed one of its fighters was critically wounded during the counter-attack.

The Israeli military had earlier said its two soldiers died and another two were wounded after entering Gaza to investigate explosives left by Palestinians before coming under fire.

The attack caused fighting that lasted some hours as Israeli forces engaged Palestinian militants from at least three organisations.

It was some of the worst fighting since the end of Operation Cast Lead over a year ago.

Hamas military spokesman Abu Obeida told reporters: “An Israeli army force raided 500 metres into Palestinian territory, and was confronted by our gunmen.

“This was our work, but it was carried out for defence.”

Two other groups, Islamic Jihad and al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, said their men also took part in the fighting.

Islamic Jihad says one of its fighters is missing presumed dead.

Palestinians say a number of civilians were wounded including a ten-year-old with gunshot wounds in his back.
