Ann Coulter 2005: John Roberts is just like David Souter
I’m not a huge fan of Ann Coulter. Her slobbering over Chris Christie and Mitt Romney nauseated me earlier in the primary season. But I have to give her credit where credit is due. Back in 2005 when George W. Bush nominated John Roberts for SCOTUS Justice, Coulter wrote an article saying that John Roberts is nothing more than a carbon copy of David Souter (daddy H.W. Bush’s SCOTUS Justice appointment who was a big liberal.) After this weeks decision on SB1070 and ObamaCARE, it turns out that Coulter is a prophet!
I believe their exact words were, “Read our lips; Souter’s a reliable conservative.”
And Bush responds by nominating a candidate who will allow Democrats to avoid fighting on their weakest ground substance. He has given us a Supreme Court nomination that will placate no liberals and should please no conservatives.
And it makes no difference that conservatives in the White House are assuring us Roberts can be trusted. We got the exact same assurances from officials working for the last president Bush about David Hackett Souter.
Maybe Roberts will contravene the sordid history of “stealth nominees” and be the Scalia or Thomas that Bush promised us when he was asking for our votes. Or maybe he won’t. The Supreme Court shouldn’t be a game of Russian roulette.
