“Cold Cash” Louisiana Democrat William Jefferson sentenced to 13 years in prison

The man who lost to Ahn “Joseph” Cao last fall in the congress elections, William Jefferson who is famous for being found with $90,000+ in his freezer is going to the slammer for 13 years. Prosecutor described this as “the most extensive and pervasive pattern of corruption in the history of Congress.” They obviously haven’t looked much into the rest of Congress then. Judge T.S. Ellis III went soft on Cold Cash Jefferson though, the amount of time behind bars was recommeneded by the government to be between 27 and 33 years, still it is by the far the stiffest jail term ever imposed on a member or former member of Congress for crimes committed while in office. I’m hoping more of the current corrupt members get sent to trial and well surpass cold cash Jefferson’s total years. NOLA has more:

Jefferson, 62, was found guilty Aug. 6 on 11 charges, including soliciting bribes, depriving citizens of honest service, money laundering and using his office as a racketeering enterprise.

He was acquitted of five other charges in a case that famously featured the revelation that he had hidden $90,000 in the freezer of his home, marked bills from the FBI that prosecutors said was going to be used as a bribe.

The judge also ordered Jefferson to forfeit the $470,653.47 the jury had determined was funneled to shell companies under his family’s control through his bribe schemes.

Jefferson was not immediately taken into custody, as prosecutors had requested. Instead the nine-term Democratic member of Congress was released pending a hearing Wednesday at which Ellis will hear arguments on whether Jefferson is a flight risk and should be sent directly to prison. His attorneys have asked that he be allowed to remain free on bond while he appeals his conviction, which is unlikely.

Barring that, lead attorney Robert Trout is asking that Jefferson be allowed to turn himself to authorities Jan. 4, which would be routine in a case of this sort, and would allow him to spend Christmas with his family.

Jefferson does not have to appear at Wednesday’s hearing, but if the judge approves the prosecution’s request, the former congressman would have to report immediately. Ellis agreed to recommend Jefferson be assigned to a low-security prison “camp.” Trout specifically recommended the federal prison in Pensacola, Fla., but Ellis said only that he would recommend a facility close to New Orleans.

Jefferson has 10 business days to file an appeal, which Trout said they would do.

Jim DeMint tries to ban ‘permanent politicians’ proposes constitution amendment to limit congressional terms

Good luck getting any votes Jim other than yourself (from either side). The South Carolina Republican – hearkening back to the days of the party’s “Contract with America” – on Tuesday offered a fix to the corrupting influence of “permanent politicians,” introducing an amendment to the Constitution that would limit Senate members to three six-year terms and House members to three two-year terms. The Washington Times has the story:

“As long as members have the chance to spend their lives in Washington, their interests will always skew toward spending taxpayer dollars to buy off special interests, covering over corruption in the bureaucracy, fundraising, relationship building among lobbyists, and trading favors for pork – in short, amassing their own power,” said Mr. DeMint, who is running for a second term next year.

Senate leaders and longtime Washington watchdogs said Mr. DeMint’s bill had a zero chance of becoming law, mostly because of a general lack of interest and the high hurdles to amending the Constitution.

“It’s a great issue to talk about, but it’s not going to happen,” said Sen. Richard J. Durbin of Illinois, the Democratic majority’s second-highest ranking leader.

Mr. Durbin said he didn’t know whether the bill would even get a vote.

Term limits have not been a cause celebre on Capitol Hill since the issue featured prominently in the “Contract with America” that helped the Republican Party win control of Congress in 1994. House Republicans brought three versions of constitutional amendments for term limits to the floor in 1995 and each failed to win the two-thirds majority needed to pass.

Melanie Sloan, executive director of the watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW), disagrees with Mr. DeMint’s premise that politicians get more corrupt the longer they serve.

“There are plenty of bad members who have been there a short time and plenty of bad members who have been there a long time,” she said. “Length of service just isn’t telling enough. It doesn’t make a great member or a terrible member.”

Paul Kirk to fill Kennedy’s vacant Senate seat?

Paul G. Kirk Jr., the former chairman of the DNC, will replace the late Ted Kennedy in the Senate until a special election is held in January, according to FOX News.

But a constitutional dispute is delaying final passage of a bill allowing Gov. Deval Patrick to name Kennedy’s successor.

Kennedy’s sons had urged the governor to pick Kirk, a former aide to the late Massachusetts Democrat.

A family confidant told The Associated Press Wednesday both Edward Kennedy Jr. and Rep. Patrick Kennedy, D-R.I., had endorsed Kirk in separate phone calls.

A top aide to Massachusetts Patrick confirmed the contacts but added, “No decision has been made yet.” A spokeswoman in Patrick Kennedy’s congressional office declined to comment.

Massachusetts lawmakers are expected Wednesday to give final approval to a change in the Senate succession law so the governor can temporarily fill Senate vacancies. The interim senator would serve until the seat is filled permanently through a special election on Jan. 19.

Massachusetts Senate Approves Kennedy Successor Bill

Gotta love the hypocrites in the state of Massachusetts, which is basically California east. After Kennedy rushed to get the state senate to change the state law changed in 2004 to require a ’special election’ to fill a vacated Senate seat (should John Kerry have won the Presidency), the libtard state has once again flip-flopped and approved a bill, again begged for by Ted Kennedy before he died to change the law back so that a “temporary” replacement until the special election for the Senate seat can be held. Rumors about temporary replacement have Michael Dukakis, the democrat failure from the 1988 Presidential election to fill the seat. More from Fox News:

The bill goes back to both chambers for a final procedural vote on Wednesday before heading to Gov. Deval Patrick, who has said he would sign it.

But according to the newest Rasmussen poll, none of these professions compare to being least respected in America to a member of Congress. 72% of those polled rated Congress as unfavorable, while 25% polled rated the job as favorable. This is an index of -47, surpassing that of CEOs by 5 points. The most favorable profession ratings were Small Business owners 94% favorable and 3% unfavorable, people who start their own business 92% favorite, 5% unfavorable, and Pastors/Religious leaders 70% favorable and 22% unfavorable.

Remember back when Ted Kennedy died, and the White House claimed the senate replacement would be a “state matter”? Well, that seems to be a think of the past, as at the Ted Kennedy funeral, Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick and Obama discussed changing the laws, that Kennedy himself changed in 2004 law to create a five-month special election campaign and block then-Gov. Mitt Romney, from naming a temporary replacement if Sen. John Kerry had won his presidential bid. From Fox News:

Gov. Deval Patrick said Friday that President Barack Obama had personally talked to him about changing the Senate succession law in Massachusetts, and White House aides were pushing for him to gain the power to temporarily replace the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy amid the administration’s health care push.
A month after a White House spokesman labeled the issue a state matter, Patrick said he and Obama spoke about changing the law as they both attended Kennedy’s funeral in Boston last month. He also said White House aides have been in contact frequently ever since and pushing for the change so they can regain their filibuster-proof majority in the U.S. Senate.

“He and his whole team have been very clear about that,” Patrick told reporters after holding a Cabinet meeting near his Berkshire Mountains vacation home.

“It’s out there that the Senate president and the (House) speaker are trying to figure out whether this can be accomplished, and he fully understands, as do his aides, who I have talked to more about it, the importance of having the support for a change agenda down in Washington,” Patrick added.

The governor spoke just moments after Republicans in the Massachusetts Senate temporarily blocked a bill allowing Patrick to name an interim appointment.

For those thinking Obama may try and go “moderate” or “centrist” tommorow night in his speech to Congress, think again. According to the Wall Street Journal, Obama will press for a government-run insurance option in a proposed overhaul of the U.S. health-care system that has divided lawmakers and voters for months.

White House officials say the president will detail what he wants in the health-care overhaul, as well as say he is open to better ideas on a government plan if lawmakers have them.

Democratic plans call for requiring most Americans to carry health insurance. Failure to comply could cost families as much as $3,800 a year, according to a new Senate proposal.

The president is likely to say that a government-run insurance plan, known as the “public option,” will not provide a level of subsidies that give it an unfair advantage over private insurers, according to aides familiar with the speech preparations.

Also, Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi told Obama in their little “meeting” yesterday, they have the votes to pass this.

Slip slipin’ away. According to the The Hill, at least 23 House Democrats already have told constituents or hometown media that they oppose the massive healthcare overhaul aka ObamaCARE. Of course, this is what they say. Democrats (or Republicans for that matter) should hardly be taken at face value, as they have proven to be nothing but liars and corruptocrats. Anyway, if these 23 (at least) turn out to be telling the truth for a change, and NO House Republicans vote for ObamaCARE, that means Pelosi has 38 more Democrats to convince in order for the bill to pass the house.

There is no video on youtube (yet) to confirm this, and nothing mentioned from the media (of course thats no shock). So you may want to take this with a grain of salt, at least until some sort of confirmation about this comes out from other sources. These is an urgent message via telephone conversation with @midlifechick, who is otherwise occupied at the moment. She asked me to post this info ASAP.

@midlifechick just returned from TownHall meeting with her US Rep. John Carter (R-TX). Representative Carter informed the crowd that talk has been bandied about Congress to appropriate EVERY state’s pension plans into the bankrupt Social Security System.

She is absolutely 100% sure that she understood him correctly. If this is allowed to happen, and I am going to stress again that at this point it is just an idea that has been submitted; the US will absolutely, 100% be a banana republic, a la Argentina.

Folks need to get a heads-up on this and be prepared if this does indeed come down the pike.

I would like to say that I am stunned, but given the track record of this Administration I guess I shouldn’t be.

As you undoubtedly heard on Tuesday, the White House on dismissed protests against Obama’s health care reforms in multiple states over the past weekend as “manufactured anger“ orchestrated by right wing groups and the Republican party and insurance companies. Heres what the moron Robert Gibbs said (from the Washington Times):

“I hope people will take a jaundiced eye to what is clearly the Astroturf nature of grass-roots lobbying,” said White House press secretary Robert Gibbs during a morning off-camera session in his office with reporters.

“This is manufactured anger,” he said.

As the worst press secretary in the history of the White House, Gibbs implied that the Republican Party is using operatives to make it appear as if members of the administration and of Congress are encountering genuine outrage and anger over the president’s proposed health care reforms.

Today the excuses are flooding in about how the protesters are “too well dressed” from racist liberal hag Barbara Boxer:

To combat this today, Hussein Obama’s latest mass e-mailing to his cult members calling on them to “seize this moment and win this historic victory for our economy, our health and our families”.

Yesterday it was reported that the White House was asking for those who saw something “fishy” to report it to flag@whitehouse.gov and also report on “evil blog posts”. U.S. Rep. Democrat Laura Richardson from California bought the house in the tree-lined upper-middle-class Curtis Park neighborhood for $535,000 in early 2007 after she was elected to the Assembly. She already owned two houses, one in her Long Beach district and the other in San Pedro. She has defaulted six times on both homes. You will noticed from the L.A. Times story summary bellow that they somehow leave out the fact of her party affiliation:

U.S. Rep. Laura Richardson’s rundown Sacramento house, which became the scourge of the neighborhood and a sore point with an investor who thought he had bought it out of foreclosure, has drawn the interest of a House ethics panel.

The Office of Congressional Ethics contacted real estate investor James York, who bought Richardson’s house at a foreclosure auction last year, only to have Washington Mutual take it back after he had recorded the deed and return the house to the congresswoman.

Yet Carolyn Maloney was forced to is apologize for using a racial slur in an interview,according to NY1. Speaking with City Hall Magazine, the Democratic lawmaker relayed a story about a phone call she received from someone attacking Senator Kirsten Gillibrand for supporting English-only education in Puerto Rico. Maloney said the person told her that having that position was like saying the N word to a Puerto Rican. In a statement, Maloney calls the slur disgusting, and says she was only quoting someone else who said it. Maloney is expected to announce soon that she will challenge Gillibrand in a Democratic primary next year.
