Bart Stupak paid off! Announces $726,409 for airports in Alpena, Delta, and Chippewa counties

Here’s what Stupak was bought off with, directly from his own site:

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Congressman Bart Stupak (D-Menominee) announced three airports in northern Michigan have received grants totaling $726,409 for airport maintenance and improvements. The funding was provided by the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Aviation Administration.

“This federal funding will help these airports better provide critical services to communities in northern Michigan,” Stupak said. “I am pleased the FAA has made this investment in our local airports and the individuals and businesses they serve.”

Alpena County Regional Airport received a grant of $85,500 to acquire friction measuring equipment, specifically a decelermeter and tow vehicle, to replace equipment that has worn out.

Delta County Airport in Escanaba received a grant of $179,209 to install a 10 foot perimeter fence to enhance security and prevent wildlife from entering the airport.

The Chippewa County International Airport near Sault Ste. Marie received a grant of $461,700 to install lighted signs on Runway 16/34 and make repairs to the pavement to meet marking requirements and maintain structural integrity.

This funding is provided to the FAA through the regular federal appropriations process and is awarded through competitive grants.

Stupak made the comments about his waning support after he huddled on the House floor with Democratic Reps. Kathy Dahlkemper (Pa.), Steve Driehaus (Ohio) and Marcy Kaptur (Ohio) — all undecided pending the outcome of the abortion debate — and Republican Rep. Joe Pitts (Pa.), an ally in their effort.

Stupak declined to name whom he believes he continues to have in his corner, consistent with his strategy throughout to avoid disclosing his backers.

Democrats endorse Slaughter Solution, defeat GOP effort to force separate vote on Senate health bill

Get the popcorn ready for the weekend folks. Today, Democrats shot down a Republican effort to force an up-or-down vote on the Senate health care bill, according to The Hill. In a 222-203 vote, Democrats beat back a GOP resolution offered by Democrat-turned-Republican Rep. Parker Griffith (Ala.) that would have forced lawmakers to vote on the Senate health care bill separately from the series of fixes they hope to make to that legislation. All Republican lawmakers who voted opposed the measure, which had the effect of ending the GOP’s effort to force a vote. They were joined by 28 Democrats, who broke with party members on the vote.

222 Democrats supported the measure, though, meaning enough to proceed. Three members of both parties did not vote.

Republicans had hoped for the separate vote to get Democratic lawmakers on record on the Senate bill, which includes some provisions on abortion, excise taxes, and other issues that House lawmakers find distasteful.

As this stand, Democrats plan a vote on a rule on Sunday that would make changes to the Senate-passed bill while deeming the original legislation to have passed the House.

Republicans have decried the measure as extra-parliamentary and possibly unconstitutional. Democrats have defended the process as well within the scope of regular congressional action, and White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said Thursday that President Barack Obama would sign a bill passed through such a process.

Lets hop in our time machines and go back to 2005. Back then of course the Republicans were in majority in the House acting like a bunch of Democrats. 5 years ago when the Republican majority in Congress approved a national debt limit increase using a self-executing rule similar to the so called Slaughter Solution, Nancy Pelosi and Democrats were fuming. The Ralph Nader-backed Public Citizen legal activists went to to federal court to challenge the constitutionality of the move. Guess who joined the Public Citizens activists in that suit with amicus briefs? According to the Washington Examiner, it was none other than Nancy Pelosi, Henry Waxman and Louise Slaughter!

“Article I of the United States Constitution requires that before proposed legislation may “become[] a Law,” U.S. CONST. art. I, § 7, cl. 2, “(1) a bill containing its exact text [must be] approved by a majority of the Members of the House of Representatives; (2) the Senate [must] approve[] precisely the same text; and (3) that text [must be] signed into law by the President,” Clinton v. City of New York, 524 U.S. 417, 448, 118 S.Ct. 2091, 141 L.Ed.2d 393 (1998).

“Public Citizen, a not-for-profit consumer advocacy organization, filed suit in District Court claiming that the Deficit Reduction Act of 2005, Pub.L. No. 109-171, 120 Stat. 4 (2006) (“DRA” or “Act”), is invalid because the bill that was presented to the President did not first pass both chambers of Congress in the exact same form. In particular, Public Citizen contends that the statute’s enactment did not comport with the bicameral passage requirement of Article I, Section 7 of the Constitution, because the version of the legislation that was presented to the House contained a clerk’s error with respect to one term, so the House and Senate voted on slightly different versions of the bill and the President signed the version passed by the Senate.

“Public Citizen asserts that it is irrelevant that the Speaker of the House and the President pro tempore of the Senate both signed a version of the proposed legislation identical to the version signed by the President. Nor does it matter, Public Citizen argues, that the congressional leaders’ signatures attest that indistinguishable legislative text passed both houses.” (Emphasis added)

James Clyburn: ObamaCARE vote could push past Easter holiday

Good news or purely a smokescreen? House Majority Whip James Clyburn told McClatchy that he has doubts that the House would vote by Thursday. He said lawmakers might have to stay in Washington right up to Easter Sunday, wrangling over their differences, and he wasn’t certain the showdown vote would take place by then.

“The chances are good, but I wouldn’t bet on it,” he said.

Clyburn cited three changes that he said might help him change November “no” votes into “yes” votes among House Democrats:

_ The latest version drops a “public option” for a new government-run health care plan on the scale of Medicare or Medicaid. The modified measure still requires Americans to buy health insurance, but it provides tax credits and other subsidies to help moderate- and low-income people purchase coverage from private companies.

_ The new bill drops a “millionaires’ tax” that would have imposed a 5.4 percent surcharge on wealthy Americans.

_ The November House legislation carried a $1 trillion price tag, while the measure that passed the Senate a month later would cost $875 billion. The modified House bill will carry a price tag in the range of $955 billion.

Clyburn was frustrated by news reports focusing on the Democratic votes he might lose from the November tally — starting with anti-abortion Democrats upset that abortion-funding limits have been loosened since then.

Clyburn said those vote-switchers — perhaps between five and 10 — would be more than offset by new supporters lured by other changes.

One crucial addition, he said, is the addition of up to $7 billion in college student aid.

Clyburn took the unusual step of naming four former Democratic opponents who he’s hopeful are preparing to vote for the reform legislation: Reps. Brian Baird of Washington state, Jason Altmire of Pennsylvania, Bart Gordon of Tennessee and John Boccieri of Ohio.

“That’s four people right there who voted no before,” Clyburn said. “Why don’t we talk about them? Everyone’s talking about who we might lose.”

So called “moderate” House Democrats who face difficult reelections this fall have a message for Obama: Don’t call us; we’ll call you. According to Politico, interviews with nearly a dozen congressional Democrats on the ballot this year reveal a decided lack of enthusiasm for having Obama come to their districts to campaign for them — gee I wonder why? Wouldn’t you want a Marxist coming to campaign for you after he was so successful with Jon Corzine, Creigh Deeds and Martha Coakley?

Some cite the president’s surely busy schedule. Others point to a practice of not bringing in national politicians to appear on their behalf. While these members aren’t necessarily attempting to distance themselves from the administration, there is nevertheless a noticeable reluctance to embrace the president among a certain class of incumbent, now that Obama’s approval rating has fallen to a new low — 46 percent in the latest Gallup survey.

It’s not an unusual development — President George W. Bush suffered a similar fate. As his popularity dipped and he became a more polarizing figure, few moderate Republicans wanted to be seen with him in their states for fear the association would be used against them by their rivals.

The difference, however, is that Bush was narrowly elected twice in a country divided between red and blue states, while Obama shredded that map. With his success in the interior West and upper South, Obama was thought to be such a political asset that he could play almost anywhere in the country.

But the sense of uncertainty over what to do with Obama seen last year in Virginia — in which Democratic gubernatorial candidate Creigh Deeds wrestled with whether to run with or from the president before ultimately embracing him in the campaign’s final weeks — now seems to be evolving into a firmer feeling among many centrist Democrats that they’d be better off without Obama appearing in their districts with them.

The White House got a taste of the awkwardness to come last week in Missouri, when Democratic Senate candidate Robin Carnahan and Rep. Russ Carnahan (D-Mo.) were both no-shows at a fundraiser Obama keynoted in suburban St. Louis. (Sen. Claire McCaskill, an early Obama supporter who received some of the event’s proceeds for her 2012 reelection campaign, did attend.)

Senate Democrats seek to kill checks and balances by abolishing filibusters

According to Fox News, the progressive liberals in the Senate are looking for yet another way to circumvent the checks and balances and do Looking to challenge a time-honored privilege widely used by both parties when they are in the minority, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid on Wednesday vowed to remove the filibuster as a weapon to kill legislation by debating it to death.

In a summit with liberal online groups, the Nevada Democrat claimed the procedural maneuver has been “abused,”

“Next Congress, we’re going to take a look at it. We are likely to have to make some changes in it, because the Republicans have abused that just like the spitball was abused in baseball and the four-corner offense was abused in basketball,” Reid told The Huffington Post.

Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., appearing at the same summit, said his Rules Committee will take action in the coming weeks.

“The rules committee is going to start holding hearings on how to undo the filibuster rule,” he said.

Schumer praised a recent effort by Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., to force a GOP senator to remain on the floor for hours to object to a jobs bill, calling the effort “very, very good.”

Republicans say Democrats have abused their accounting of GOP filibusters, noting for instance that any objection to Democrats not allowing GOP amendments is counted as a filibuster.

Filibusters are a key tool for the minority party to delay or stop a proposal by keeping the Senate debating an issue. The current rules of the Senate state that senators can speak and debate as long as they want unless 60 senators vote to end the stalling tactic, or “invoke cloture.”

Republican Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., said that Reid’s statements don’t match his past comments on the tool.

“I can’t tell you how many Democratic leaders, including our present majority leader, has said it’s tyranny if you get rid of the 60-vote rule. The idea of the Senate being a place where we have to form consensus to make major changes in this country, should not be put off lightly,” he said at a press conference on Capitol Hill.

Coburn wears his mantel of “Dr. No” proudly, as he often attempts to block bills that contain earmarks or provisions that increase the deficit. Democrats criticize Coburn, in return, for sometimes supporting measures that are not paid for, like emergency war funding.

Reid said he believed the House and Senate should be different.

As guards cleared the courtroom Wednesday, Conyers yelled that she planned to appeal.

Conyers suggested that she was the victim of “badgering” last summer when she acknowledged a conspiracy to take bribes for her support of a Houston company seeking a sludge contract. U.S. District Judge Avern Cohn says her plea deal was voluntary.

Conyers is the wife of Democratic U.S. Rep. John Conyers. She quit the council in June.

Prosecutors also want the judge to consider allegations that Conyers and an aide collected $69,500 from people seeking help from the city. Her lawyer denies the claims.

Who knew all Democrats were Chicago style thugs like Obama? I guess this explains why even the so called “moderate” Democrats voted for ObamaCARE. The latest thug Sherrod Brown a Democrat Senator for Ohio who according to The Hill threatened “pain” for Republicans who seek to slow or block passage of ObamaCARE.

Brown said that if Republicans try to offer amendments and use parliamentary maneuvers to grind out the legislative process, Democrats would retaliate with all-night sessions and other methods of fighting back.

“I think they’re going to try to do amendments, as many as they can get away with,” Brown said Wednesday evening during an appearance on MSNBC. “I think we keep them here all night — tonight, the next night, the next night, the next night.”

“If they’re going to try to filibuster in the traditional sense or the more modern sense that they do, they’re going to have pain, too,” Brown added.

Democrats are hoping to move forward soon with healthcare legislation, though Republicans like Sen. John Thune (S.D.) have said the GOP is drawing up a number of plays to try to slow down or halt passage of the healthcare bill.

The Senate is expected to take up a series of fixes to its original healthcare bill under the budget reconciliation rules, which sidesteps the 60-vote threshold needed to end a filibuster and allows the majority to pass an item with a simple majority.

By proceeding with those rules, Republicans’ ability to slow down orblog the legislation would be limited.

Still, Brown said that Democrats planned their own hardball tactics if the GOP were to try to force a prolonged debate on the final stages of health reform.

“They’re going to have to stay, too,” he said. “We’re going to have to have quorum calls, and we’re going to do whatever we need to do to get this passed within Senate rules and within fair play.”

Edwards, the disgraced two-time Presidential loser, is being investigated by the feds, including the FBI and IRS, for possible campaign violations related to paying his mistress Rielle Hunter.

The grand jury has been meeting since April 2009, and insiders say an indictment is imminent.

Another perverted Democrat bites the dust! Eric Massa, who represents New York’s 29th district will not seek reelection — after only one term in office. Its certainly not from old age, or the fact Massa wants to spend more time with his family. Instead, Massa wouldn’t seek re-election because the House ethics committee has been informed of allegations that Massa, who is married with two children, sexually harassed a male staffer! By the way, this is a district that McCain won in 2008, and Massa won with only 51% of the vote in 2008. According to Gateway Pundit, House Majority leader Steny Hoyer knew about the sexual harassment issue last month! Politico asked Massa about the allegations:

Asked about the sexual harassment allegations, Massa said: “When someone makes a decision to leave Congress, everybody says everything. I have health issues. I’ll talk about it [later].”

Massa recently suffered from non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and he has said that his experience with cancer drove him to run for office so he could help reform the health care system.

A 20-year Navy veteran, Massa was elected to office in 2008. He serves on the Agriculture, Armed Services and Homeland Security committees, and his departure endangers Democrats’ hold on his competitive upstate New York seat.

Massa is scheduled to hold a conference call at 3:30 this afternoon to announce his decision, which came as a complete surprise to several of his freshman Democratic colleagues in the New York delegation.

According to the New York Daily News, which first reported that Massa was retiring, the congressman called party leaders and supporters in his district Wednesday to tell them of his plans.

Democrats, who are obviously very worried about their elections come November are jumping on the dump Rangel bandwagon! Rangel suffered a significant blow Tuesday afternoon when Rep. Artur Davis – a member of both the Ways and Means Committee and the Congressional Black Caucus who’s running for governor back home in Alabama – issued a statement in which he said the chairman “should do the right thing and step aside.”

Another Democrat member told POLITICO Tuesday night:

“I think Charlie should do the right thing and step down. We expected that out of Tom DeLay. He should do the honorable thing … There’s no double standard. “

For a few days, the New York Democrat’s grip on power seemed steady even after the House ethics committee found him in violation of House gift rules last week. Speaker and Rangel ally Nancy Pelosi (DCal.) vowed to wait to see if ethics acts on more of the allegations that have been lodged against him.

But Republicans are planning to bring a resolution to the House floor calling for his removal as chairman, and Democratic aides said Tuesday that the party’s most vulnerable incumbents are not willing to risk the electoral fallout that would come from standing by the 39-year House veteran.

If all House members vote and all 178 Republicans favor removing Rangel, the GOP would need 39 Democrats to turn against the chairman to win the vote. By Tuesday night, at least 14 Democrats had said Rangel should give up his chairmanship – and it was clear that more were coming.

Rangel declined to talk with reporters at the Capitol Tuesday night. A source close to him pushed back against rumors that he planned to step aside from his Ways and Means post, saying Rangel wanted to wait until the House votes so that he can “see what his strength was.”

A senior aide to a vulnerable House Democrat said that Rep. Joe Crowley, an ally of Rangel who has also played a leadership role at the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, is leading the whip count efforts on Rangel, acting a go-between between the vulnerable freshman and sophomore Democrats, on the one hand, and Rangel and Democratic leadership on the other.

Kennedy’s grandsons is considering a run for the U.S. House of Representatives seat that Delahunt would vacate, according to Fox News. Joseph P. Kennedy III, one of the twin sons of former Rep. Joseph P. Kennedy II, may run this fall if Democratic Rep. William Delahunt decides against seeking re-election in his South Shore and Cape Cod district.

Kennedy, 29, “has been considering it but he hasn’t made a decision,” said the Democrat, who demanded anonymity to speak about private conversations with the father and son.

The younger Kennedy did not immediately respond to a request for comment. He is a graduate of Stanford University and Harvard Law School who works as a prosecutor in Barnstable County, near his family’s Cape Cod compound.

Delahunt has served in Congress since 1997, but Massachusetts incumbents were shocked in January when a little-known Republican state senator, Scott Brown, claimed the U.S. Senate seat held for nearly a half-century by Edward M. Kennedy.

That prompted questions about the endurance of the Kennedy legacy and inspired several local Republicans, including former state Treasurer Joe Malone and state Rep. Jeffrey Perry of Sandwich, to say they are considering running for Delahunt’s seat.

Brown not only beat his Democratic opponent, Attorney General Martha Coakley, in Delahunt’s district, but he also won the Barnstable precinct where the late senator lived and used to vote.

Delahunt has also been criticized in recent weeks for his handling of a 1986 shooting by Amy Bishop, a University of Alabama professor accused of killing three colleagues this month. At the time, Delahunt was the local district attorney, and he accepted the findings of local and state police that Bishop’s shooting of her brother was accidental.
