According to the Washington Post, Obama, has yet again showed what a complete coward he is as The United States said on Thursday it does not aim to impose crippling sanctions on Iran. Instead, they would rather “pressure” the Iranian government to change course on its nuclear program while protecting ordinary people.

“It is not our intent to have crippling sanctions that have … a significant impact on the Iranian people,” State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley told reporters. “Our actual intent is … to find ways to pressure the government while protecting the people.”

Iran’s big “punch” at the west? Ahmadinejad claims Iran is now officially a nuclear state

While I slept, all the violence in Iran was going on, the government shot at opposition protesters, killed some, and took others to jail. But what was the so called “punch” from Iran? Apparently it was Mahmoud Ahmadinejad asserted Thursday that Iran has produced its first batch of higher-grade enriched uranium and declared that his country is now a “nuclear state,” although he continued to deny that Iran has any intention of building nuclear weapons according to the Washington Post.

Addressing a huge crowd of government supporters in central Tehran on the 31st anniversary of Iran’s Islamic revolution, Ahmadinejad defiantly declared that the state’s uranium-enrichment facility near Natanz has produced an unspecified quantity of uranium enriched to 20 percent just two days after starting the process.

“We have the capability to enrich uranium more than 20 percent or even 80 percent, but we don’t enrich [to that level] because we don’t need it,” Ahmadinejad said. Reiterating his denials of any plans to build nuclear weapons, he told the throng, “When we say that we don’t build nuclear bombs, it means that we won’t do that because we don’t believe in having them. The Iranian nation is brave enough that if one day we wanted to create an atomic bomb, we would announce it publicly and would create it.” Addressing Western powers, he added: “We are not afraid of you.”

Iran announced Monday that it would begin increasing the enrichment level of some of its uranium the next day, from a current maximum of 3.5 percent to 20 percent, ostensibly to provide fuel for a 41-year-old, U.S.-built research reactor in Tehran that produces medical isotopes. Although it falls short of the 90 percent enriched uranium needed for the fissile material in nuclear weapons, the plan to produce 20 percent enriched uranium was met with swift condemnation from the United States and its allies, which began moving to impose tougher international sanctions on Iran. Three rounds of U.N. Security Council have been imposed on Iran for producing low-enriched 3.5 percent uranium, which Tehran has said it needs to fuel nuclear power plants.

Ahmadinejad vowed that Iran’s uranium-enrichment work “will continue until the needs of the country are totally met.” He went on to claim, without specifying amounts, that production of 20 percent enriched uranium would triple in the next few days.

However, Ahmadinejad’s remarks Thursday were contradicted by new U.S. assessments that indicate Iran is experiencing surprising setbacks in its efforts to enrich uranium. The assessments suggest that equipment failures and other difficulties could undermine Iranian plans for dramatically scaling up its nuclear program.

Former U.S. officials and independent nuclear experts say continued technical problems could also delay — though probably not halt — Iran’s march toward achieving nuclear-weapons capability, giving the United States and its allies more time to press for a diplomatic solution. In recent months, Israeli officials have been less vocal in their demands that Western nations curtail Iran’s nuclear program.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says the nation will deliver a harsh blow to the “global arrogance” on this year’s anniversary of the Islamic Revolution.

“The Islamic Revolution opened a window to liberty for the human race, which was trapped in the dead ends of materialism,” Ahmadinejad said during a cabinet meeting on Sunday.

“If the Islamic Revolution had not occurred, liberalism and Marxism would have crushed all human dignity in their power-seeking and money-grubbing claws. Nothing would have remained of human and spiritual principles,” he added.

Ahmadinejad said that in the three decades of its history, the Islamic Revolution had inspired some great developments in the world.

The Iranian president made the remarks as the 31st anniversary of the Islamic Revolution approaches.

Iranians are expected to pour into the streets on February 11 to celebrate the occasion in public rallies across the country, as they have done annually over the past three decades.

Iranian Mohammad Javad Larijani calls Obama the N-Word in Farsi

As Obama continues to dither on what to do about Iran and their nuke program, it doesn’t appear they are exactly intimidated by him. Take for instance Mohammad Javad Larijani, an Iranian politician, cleric and academic and one of the main advocates of fundamentalist interpretation of Islam in Iran. Larijani criticized the policies adopted by Obama and referred to him using a racial epithet in Farsi. According to PBS, despite using this Farsi terminology, Larijani claims he isn’t racist. The guy sounds like your prototypical left wing nut job in America actually. Perhaps “Mohammad” mixed up the N-word with “Negro Dialect” in Farsi.

“When Barack Obama was sworn into office he talked of verbally engaging Iran,” the U.C. Berkeley graduate was quoted as saying. “What has changed is that today this [the equivalent of the N-word in Farsi] talks of regime change in Iran.”

In a Saturday meeting at the Islamic Engineers Society, Larijani said, “I am not a racist, but I must respond to this man [Obama] in some way.”

Larijani’s brother, Ali, is the speaker of Majles (Parliament). Another brother, Sadegh, is head of the judiciary.

“It would be almost literally irresponsible if Centcom were not to have been thinking about the various ‘what ifs’ and to make plans for a whole variety of different contingencies,” Petraeus said in comments posted on CNN’s Web Site. The general, commander of U.S. forces in the Middle East and Central Asia, is head of U.S. Central Command, or Centcom.

Sounds scary huh? According to Bloomberg, Petraeus declined to comment on the likelihood of a strike on Iranian nuclear facilities by Israel, which hasn’t ruled out such a step, CNN said. The U.S. commander said the Iranian nuclear infrastructure, now strengthened against attack with enhanced underground tunnels, wasn’t fully protected.

“Well, they certainly can be bombed,” CNN quoted Petraeus as saying. “The level of effect would vary with who it is that carries it out, what ordnance they have and what capability they can bring to bear.”

DENIED! Iran forbids John Kerry from visiting

Last week it was reported that John Kerry had submitted an official request to visit Tehran in an emissary role. Apparently, even the Iranian Iranian legislative nutjobs aren’t even impressed with an America traitor as they decided not to allow a visit from Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman, according to The Hill.

“Members of the Iranian parliament’s Foreign Relations Committee (a subcommittee of the parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission) voiced opposition to the request after studying the issue,” Hassan Ebrahimi, head of the committee, told the semi-official Fars News Agency.

Kerry spokesman Frederick Jones told the Wall Street Journal before Christmas, though, that no trip had been scheduled. “Is he planning now on going to Iran? The answer is no,” said Jones.

When asked Sunday if Kerry had filed a travel request as claimed or if Iran had taken pre-emptive action against talk of a visit, Jones told The Hill, “John Kerry has no plans to travel to Iran.”

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehman-Parast said last week that “legislative officials are studying the case and they are in charge for providing a response.”

On Saturday, Iranian legislators stepped up the rhetoric against the news that Kerry was considering traveling to Tehran with the blessing of the White House.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran has no plans to negotiate with any American official, unless the country (the U.S.) changes its policies,” member of the parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Zohreh Elahian said, according to Fars News Agency.

“Iran-US relations are not under such conditions that could produce results through a number of non-targeted meetings and talks,” rapporteur of the parliament’s Nationals Security and Foreign Policy Commission Kazzem Jalali told Fars on Saturday in response to a question about Kerry wishing to visit Iran.

“Americans are more seeking to exploit the media and means of propaganda in a bid to gain an advantage,” Jalali said. “…A number of the high-ranking officials in the present U.S. administration sent letters for talks with Iranian officials when they served as senators.

“The bills ratified in the US legislative bodies against Iran are examples of paradoxical behavior which we are witnessing from American statesmen towards Iran, and indicate that their policies on Iran are not honest,” he added.

Iran’s Mousavi Says He Is ‘Ready for Martyrdom’ in defense of the people’s right to hold peaceful protests against government

Iran’s opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi on Friday said he was ready to sacrifice his life in defense of the people’s right to hold peaceful protests against the government. Mousavi’s statement comes on the heals of Iran’s state prosecutor warning opposition leaders could be put on trial if they don’t denounce this week’s anti-government protests. According to Fox News:

Iranian hard-liners have called for the execution of Mousavi and other opposition figures, while a previously unknown group claimed in an online posting that suicide squads were ready to assassinate opposition leaders should the judiciary fail to punish them within a week.

In one of his strongest statements to date, Mousavi on Friday said he was “ready for martyrdom” — the sacrifice of one’s life for a higher cause — and lashed out at the bloody crackdown the authorities are waging against the opposition.

He said the government was making more mistakes by resorting to violence and killings, and that it must accept the people’s rights to hold peaceful demonstrations.

“I explicitly and clearly state that an order to execute, murder and imprison (opposition leaders) … won’t resolve the problem,” Mousavi said in a statement on his Web site, Kaleme. “I’m not afraid to be one of the martyrs people have offered in the struggle for their just demands.”

Iran’s internal turmoil has grown increasingly bitter. The confrontation between clerical rulers and their opponents returned to the streets in recent weeks, after a harsh crackdown immediately following the June 12 balloting all but crushed the opposition movement.

One of those killed in clashes between security forces and opposition protesters on Sunday, when Shiite Muslims marked the sacred day of Ashoura, was Mousavi’s nephew, Ali Mousavi.

He was buried Wednesday in a hastily organized ceremony that was attended by the opposition leader and other family members. Authorities had taken the body from the hospital earlier in the week in what was seen as an attempt to prevent the funeral from turning into another pro-opposition protest.

Sunday’s unrest was followed by two days of pro-government protests Wednesday and Thursday in which crowds chanted calls for the execution of Mousavi, and another opposition figure, Mahdi Karroubi.

Both Mousavi and Karroubi were losing candidates in the June election, in which Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was declared the winner. The opposition argues the election was rigged and that Ahmadinejad won by fraud.

Some government supporters at the two days of rallies wore white funeral shrouds to symbolize a willingness to die in defense of Iran’s clerical rulers. Several hundred turned out for demonstration Thursday in southern Tehran outside the offices of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, state radio reported.

In his statement Friday, Mousavi also denounced hard-liners who he said preached violence from state-funded podiums in the name of Islam.

“Encouraging the killing of people … is a tragedy carried out by specific individuals and the state TV,” he said, adding that efforts to silence the opposition “through arrests, violence and threats,” would not succeed.

Long War Journal reveals that the US has released the leader of an Iranian-backed Shia terror group behind the kidnapping and murder of five US soldiers in Karbala in January 2007. This scum’s name is Qays Khazali or Qais Qazali. Regardless of how this POS’s last name is spelled, “Qais” was the commander of the League of the Righteous before US forces detained him and several other Shia terrorists in 2007. Qais commanded a large Mahdi Army faction and served as a spokesman and senior aide to Muqtada al Sadr. The terror group, which was part of the Mahdi Army until the spring of 2008, has received extensive financial and military support from Iran’s Qods Force, the external division that backs Hezbollah and is tasked with supporting the Khomeinist Islamist revolution. so what did the release of this dangerous individual net America? Jack and Squat. Unless you consider the “trade” of a BRITISH hostage named Peter Moore a fair and equal deal for America.

“We let a very dangerous man go, a man whose hands are stained with US and Iraqi blood,” a military officer said. “We are going to pay for this in the future.”

The US military has maintained that the release of members and leaders of the League of the Righteous is related to a reconciliation agreement between the terror group and the Iraqi government, but some US military officers disagree.

“The official line is the release of Qazali is about reconciliation, but in reality this was a prisoner swap,” a military intelligence official said.

Moore and four members of his personal bodyguard were kidnapped at the Finance Ministry in Baghdad in May 2007 by a group that calls itself the Islamic Shia Resistance, which is in fact a front for the League of the Righteous. The group had always insisted that Qais, his brother Laith, and other members of the Asaib al Haq be released in exchange for Moore and the others. Three of Moore’s bodyguards were executed while in custody, and the fourth is thought to have been murdered as well.

“This was a deal signed and sealed in British and American blood,” a US military officer told The Long War Journal. “We freed all of their leaders and operatives; they [the League of the Righteous] executed their hostages and sent them back in body bags. And we’re supposed to be happy about it.”

As of mid-October, the US had released more than 100 members of the League of the Righteous. The US has also released several senior Qods Force officers, including Mahmud Farhadi, the leader of the Zafr Command, one of three units subordinate to the Qods Force’s Ramazan Corps. Farhadi was among five Iranians turned over to the Iraqi government and then subsequently turned over to the Iranians in July.

The US has released the Iranian operatives and proxies despite rising tensions between Iran and Iran. Iran is currently occupying Iraqi oil wells in Maysan province. Shia terror groups backed by Iran remain active in Iraq, and the Iraqi security forces continue to round up members of the Hezbollah Brigades, the Mahdi Army, the Promised Day Brigade, and the Special Groups. Iraqi security forces are also actively hunting for Qods Force agents who have entered Iraq.

Iran caught trying to smuggle raw uranium from Kazakhstan

Before the movie Borat came out 3 years ago, I never heard a word about a country named Kazakhstan. Maybe it’s due to my lacking of an elitist left wing Harvard education, I don’t know. But according to this latest AP/Yahoo disturbing story, an intelligence report says Iran is trying to import 1,350 tons of purified uranium ore from Kazakhstan in violation of U.N. Security Council sanctions.

Such a deal would be significant because Tehran appears to be running out of that material, which it needs to feed its uranium enrichment program.

A summary of the report obtained by The Associated Press on Tuesday said the deal could be completed within weeks. It said Tehran was willing to pay $450 million, or close to 315 million euros, for the shipment.

An official from the country that drew up the report said Kazakh government employees acting on their own were behind the deal. The official demanded anonymity in exchange for discussing intelligence matters.

After-hours calls put in to offices of Kazatomprom, the Kazak state uranium company, in Kazakhstan and Moscow, were not answered. There was no immediate reaction from Tehran.

Iran is under three sets of Security Council sanctions for refusing to freeze its enrichment program and related activities that could be used to make nuclear weapons. Tehran denies such aspirations.

Iranian security forces fired on stone-throwing protesters in the center of the capital Sunday in one of the bloodiest confrontations in months, opposition Web sites and witnesses said. At least five people were killed, according to Fox News. Some accounts of the violence in Tehran were vivid and detailed, but they could not be independently confirmed because of government restrictions on media coverage. Police, who denied using firearms, said dozens of officers were injured and more than 300 protesters were arrested. The dead included a nephew of opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi, according to Mousavi’s Web site, Kaleme.ir. The clashes were sure to deepen antagonism between the government and a reform movement that has shown resilience in the face of repeated crackdowns.

The street chaos coincided with commemorations of Shiite Islam’s most important observance, Ashoura, fueling protesters’ defiance with its message of sacrifice and dignity in the face of coercion.

Still, many demonstrators had not anticipated such harsh tactics by the authorities, despite police warnings of tougher action against any protests on the sacred day.

Amateur video footage purportedly from the center of Tehran showed an enraged crowd carrying away one casualty, chanting, “I’ll kill, I’ll kill the one who killed my brother.” In several locations, demonstrators confronted security forces, hurling stones and setting their motorcycles, cars and vans ablaze, according to video footage and pro-reform Web sites.

Protesters tried to cut off roads with burning barricades. One police officer was photographed with blood streaming down his face after he was set upon by the crowd.

There were unconfirmed reports that four people died in protests in Tabriz in northwest Iran, the pro-reform Rah-e-Sabz Web site said. Fierce clashes also broke out in Isfahan and Najafabad in central Iran and Shiraz in the south, it said.

Mousavi’s Web site said the nephew, Ali Mousavi, was shot in the back on Azadi Street, or Freedom Street, during clashes in which security forces reportedly fired on demonstrators, and was taken to Ibn Sina Hospital. It said Mousavi and other family members rushed to the hospital.

A close aide to Mousavi, a presidential contender in a disputed June election, said Ali Mousavi died of injuries in the hospital. The aide spoke on condition of anonymity because of fears of reprisals from the government.

The protests began with thousands of opposition supporters chanting “Death to the dictator,” a reference to hard-line President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, as they marched in defiance of official warnings of a harsh crackdown on any demonstrations coinciding with Ashoura. The observance commemorates the seventh-century death in battle of one of Shiite Islam’s most beloved saints.

Security forces tried but failed to disperse protesters on a central Tehran street with tear gas, baton charges and warning shots. They then opened fire on protesters, killing at least three people, said witnesses and the Rah-e-Sabz Web site. Another protester was shot dead on a nearby street, they said.

Confidential intelligence documents obtained by The Times UK show that Iran is working on testing a key final component of a nuclear bomb. The notes, from Iran’s most sensitive military nuclear project, describe a four-year plan to test a neutron initiator, the component of a nuclear bomb that triggers an explosion. Foreign intelligence agencies date them to early 2007, four years after Iran was thought to have suspended its weapons program.

An Asian intelligence source last week confirmed to The Times that his country also believed that weapons work was being carried out as recently as 2007 — specifically, work on a neutron initiator.

The technical document describes the use of a neutron source, uranium deuteride, which independent experts confirm has no possible civilian or military use other than in a nuclear weapon. Uranium deuteride is the material used in Pakistan’s bomb, from where Iran obtained its blueprint.

“Although Iran might claim that this work is for civil purposes, there is no civil application,” said David Albright, a physicist and president of the Institute for Science and International Security in Washington, which has analysed hundreds of pages of documents related to the Iranian programme. “This is a very strong indicator of weapons work.”

The documents have been seen by intelligence agencies from several Western countries, including Britain. A senior source at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed that they had been passed to the UN’s nuclear watchdog.

A Foreign and Commonwealth Office spokeswoman said yesterday: “We do not comment on intelligence, but our concerns about Iran’s nuclear programme are clear. Obviously this document, if authentic, raises serious questions about Iran’s intentions.”

Responding to The Times’ findings, an Israeli government spokesperson said: “Israel is increasingly concerned about the state of the Iranian nuclear programme and the real intentions that may lie behind it.”

According to the Times Online UK, the United Nations and Iranian officials have been secretly negotiating a deal to persuade world powers to lift sanctions and allow Tehran to retain the bulk of its nuclear programme in return for co-operation with UN inspectors. According to a draft document seen by The Times UK, the 13-point agreement was drawn up in September by Mohamed ElBaradei, the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), in an effort to break the stalemate over Iran’s nuclear program before he stands down at the end of this month. Tt was thought that Mr ElBaradei was anxious to secure his legacy after infighting over his perceived weakness in dealing with Iran.

The plan would require the UN Security Council to revoke the three existing sanctions and five resolutions ordering Iran to halt its uranium enrichment — an unthinkable development at a time when the West is focused on how to impose more, not fewer, sanctions on Iran.

Russia and China, who have commercial ties with Iran and have been pressing for a compromise, may see merit in the plan, however.

Hopes of reaching a consensus rose in September with the discovery of a second uranium enrichment plant under construction near Qom, which inspectors were allowed to visit finally last month.

Mr ElBaradei’s draft agreement envisaged allowing Iran to maintain and even expand its uranium enrichment programme, albeit under closer IAEA scrutiny, as part of a globally managed nuclear fuel bank. “The sides are to set up an international consortium for uranium enrichment, both in Iran and outside Iran,” the document said.

Section ten of the document proposed that if Iran complied with the arrangements, the signatories would report positively to the UN Security Council, where Iran would be rewarded with the lifting of sanctions.

“At first, the sanctions prohibiting the movement of scientists and technicians are to be lifted immediately, as are the sanctions connected to the supply of spare parts for aircraft and other essential activities,” it said.

Color me shocked. BTW, that was sarcasm for you braincell challenged liberals. According to Wired.com, the UN’s atomic watchdogs are worried that the mullahs just might have more secret nuclear sites that haven’t been revealed or discovered. Iran is being so squirrely about its recently-revealed enrichment plant, the international inspectors say, that there very well could be others, scattered around the country. Really now? How is that even possible? Iran lying about nukes and nuke sites? IMPOSSIBLE!

Courtesy of Arms Control Wonk, we can take a first look at the International Atomic Energy Agency’s latest report on Iran’s nuclear drive. The paper is couched in cautious, bureaucratic language, but one thing is clear: Iran isn’t being straight about its nuclear ambitions. And that could mean there could be more “undeclared nuclear material and activities in Iran.”

The report contains details about a visit by representatives of the IAEA to a once-secret nuclear site near the city of Qom. In late October, inspectors were able to pay a visit to the Fordow Fuel Enrichment Plant, which is located about 20 kilometers north of Qom.

What did they find? According to the report, the IAEA verified that the plant — which the Iranians say is not planned to be operational until 2011 — was being built to contain sixteen cascades with a total of approximately 3,000 centrifuges. The Iranians say they plan to produce low-enriched uranium suitable for nuclear fuel; the plant is built for older IR-1 centrifuges, but the facility could be upgraded to contain more advanced centrifuges at a later date.

Inspectors also held meetings in Tehran to discuss the design of the plant, as well as the timeline for its construction. According to the Iranians, funds were allocated to launch the project in the second half of 2007 — but the Islamic Republic did not notify the agency about the facility’s existence until September 2009. That delayed declaration, the IAEA politely noted, “reduces the level of confidence in the absence of other nuclear facilities under construction and gives rise to questions about whether there were any other nuclear facilities not declared to the agency,” the report said.

In other words, a pattern of secrecy persists when it comes to Iran’s nuclear ambitions. And unless Tehran shifts gears, “the Agency will not be in a position to provide credible assurance about the absence of undeclared nuclear material and activities in Iran.”

The Guardian (UK) mentions that the UN’s nuclear watchdog has asked Iran to explain evidence suggesting that Iranian scientists have experimented with an advanced nuclear warhead design. But of course as we all know, Iran only only nuke technology for “peaceful purposes” right? The Guardian says taht the very existence of the technology, known as a “two-point implosion” device, is officially secret in both the US and Britain, but according to previously unpublished documentation in a dossier compiled by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Iranian scientists may have tested high-explosive components of the design. The sophisticated technology, once mastered, allows for the production of smaller and simpler warheads than older models. It reduces the diameter of a warhead and makes it easier to put a nuclear warhead on a missile.

Documentation referring to experiments testing a two-point detonation design are part of the evidence of nuclear weaponisation gathered by the IAEA and presented to Iran for its response.

The dossier, titled “Possible Military Dimensions of Iran’s Nuclear Program”, is drawn in part from reports submitted to it by western intelligence agencies.

The agency has in the past treated such reports with scepticism, particularly after the Iraq war. But its director general, Mohamed ElBaradei, has said the evidence of Iranian weaponisation “appears to have been derived from multiple sources over different periods of time, appears to be generally consistent, and is sufficiently comprehensive and detailed that it needs to be addressed by Iran”.

Extracts from the dossier have been published previously, but it was not previously known that it included documentation on such an advanced warhead. “It is breathtaking that Iran could be working on this sort of material,” said a European government adviser on nuclear issues.

Rumors Rumors Rumors. Yes, thats all it is rumors, but George Stephanopoulos has decided to post about the rumors of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei being in a coma in Iran, linking to a story from Pajamas Media that posted these details about Ayatollah Ali Khamenei being in a coma. There has even been an update at the site saying that the Tehran Bazaar mentioned that Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has died (nothing has been confirmed yet, so don’t get excited just yet):

Yesterday afternoon at 2.15PM local time, Khamenei collapsed and
was taken to his special clinic. Nobody – except his son and the
doctors – has since been allowed to get near him.
His official, but secret, status is: “in the hands of the gods”.

Reportedly this collapse is natural. Many would like him to move to his
afterlife but reportedly the collapse was not ‘externally induced’
[no poisioning]. The few insiders who know about the collapse see
this development “as a gift from the gods”.

His condition had already seriously deteriorated over the last
months, aggravated by his nervous condition due to [1] his
inability to solve the problems created by his manipulation of the
election results and the refusal of [a large part of] the
population to accept this, plus [2] his loss of religious authority
by means of the repeated condemnations of events by senior clerics

Reportedly the principal aims of Khamenei of the last couple of
weeks, if not months, were to ensure [1] a positive reputation as
his legacy and [2] the physical survival of his family members and
their wealth, reportedly now largely in Syria and in Turkey (remember the truck convoy of $8.5 billion in cash and gold that was seized by the Turks?).

Outlook is uncertain but speculation is – considering that he is in
coma since more than 24 hours – that he may not come out of his coma and/or that he may die very soon.

If he dies it is expected that immediately a bloody clash will
develop between the powers behind Rafsanjani, who will immediately
claim temporary religious authority and overall control, and the
powers behind Achmadinejad who will scramble in order to regain
control and ensure their survival.

According to a bulletin from the Greens (Moussavi/Karroubi et al), there are widespread rumors in the Tehran Bazaar that Khamenei has died. The Greens say they cannot confirm it, but that there is an “abnormal atmosphere” in the streets, which almost certainly means there are more security people than usual.

Russia resisting sanctions against Iran

Please hold back your surprise and shock. Russia pushed back Tuesday at U.S. efforts to threaten tough new sanctions if Iran fails to prove its nuclear program is peaceful, a setback to the Obama administration’s desire to present a united front with Moscow, according to the Washington Times. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. who met with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton on Tuesday said Moscow believed that such threats would not persuade Iran to comply and that negotiations should continue to be pursued as Lavrov said:

“Threats, sanctions and threats of pressure in the current situation, we are convinced, would be counterproductive.”

Clinton, who met later with Medvedev, said she had not asked for Moscow’s specific support for actually imposing sanctions. But U.S. officials said they were disappointed that Lavrov had come out against even the threat of new penalties.

One senior official traveling with Clinton said the U.S. continued to believe it is critical to get tangible signs of support from Moscow for at least considering new sanctions because the more united they are, the more likely pressure on Iran is to work. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss internal administration thinking.

Clinton agreed with Lavrov that the U.S. believed it was important to pursue diplomacy in the carrot-and-stick approach the international community is taking with Iran. But, she also said it was critical to let Iran know what will happen should it continue to rebuff the demands.

Theres a reason why only about 4% of those polled in Israel think that Obama is going to help them, and this can add another reason. According to The Hill, a State Department spokesman on Friday signaled that the president’s mandate that Iran has two weeks to permit inspections of its recently unveiled uranium refinement plant was not “written in stone.”

“I don’t think that there’s a hard-and-fast deadline,” State Department spokesman Ian Kelly said during Friday’s press briefing, after a reporter asked what the consequences of Iran’s inaction might be.

“I think that we’ve made it quite clear this was a matter of some urgency; that we expected [Iran] to take urgent and concrete steps to open up this facility, and not only just open it up but also make sure that we were able to — or that the IAEA would be able to — talk to some of the engineers there and see documents and plans,” Kelly added.
