US may be seeking Israel ‘regime change’

I don’t know who the f*ck Obama thinks he is, but apparently at least according to this AFP story, the Obama administration’s row with Israel over settlements has prompted some analysts to wonder whether it seeks “regime change,” a new government that can make peace with the Palestinians. However, the analysts doubt that President Barack Obama’s administration, which has made Arab-Israeli peace a national security priority, will achieve anything if it has indeed adopted such a strategy.

In unusually harsh words, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Friday that his right-wing government’s plans to build new settler homes in east Jerusalem sent a “deeply negative signal” about Israel’s ties to its top ally.

“Is this about regime change, or is it about (Israeli) behavior modification?” asked Aaron David Miller, a Middle East peace negotiator in past Republican and Democratic administrations.

“Because either way, it’s going to be a rocky ride,” Miller told AFP.

“If it’s the former, then I think we’re naive in the extreme in thinking that we will be able to produce and somehow manage that,” said Miller, now at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington.

Miller said Obama and Clinton may be trying to create the impression Netanyahu is “mismanaging the relationship” with Washington in order to shake up Israeli politics.

After all, he said, former president George H.W. Bush and his top diplomat James Baker did much the same thing with then Israeli prime minister Yitzhak Shamir and helped pave the way for Yitzhak Rabin to become prime minister.

“But there are no more Rabins,” Miller said.

Rabin, who was assassinated by an Israeli right-wing extremist in 1995, sealed a short-lived peace deal with Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat at the White House in 1993 under then president Bill Clinton.

Under another scenario, if the Obama administration defuses the row and even wins some concessions from Netanyahu, he warned, it may still be impossible to bridge the Israeli-Palestinian divide, say analysts,

Miller and others like Daniel Kurtzer, the former US ambassador to Egypt and Israel, have long wondered whether the Obama administration has a strategy to revive Arab-Israeli peace talks suspended since 2008.

Both noted that the Obama administration, in its first year, demanded a total halt to Jewish settlements, only to yield to Netanyahu’s call for a 10-month moratorium on construction in the West Bank but not in east Jerusalem.

The Palestinians want east Jerusalem, which Israel captured in the 1967 war, to be the capital of a future state; Israel claims all of Jerusalem as its capital.

Kurtzer, who is now at Princeton University, could not rule out that the Obama administration might be contemplating a way to change Israel’s political landscape.

“I would like to say ‘no’ because we don’t do that with Israel and with friends and democracies,” Kurtzer told AFP when asked whether “regime change” might be part of the Obama strategy.

“But I don’t doubt that there are some (Obama) people who are angry enough to want to see the (Netanyahu) government fall,” he said.

The previous George W. Bush administration embraced “regime change” for Iraq, Iran and North Korea, although the term referred to the violent overthrow of dictatorships.

“In people’s heart of hearts, they probably want somebody other than Netanyahu but I can’t imagine that anybody really believes that they have a strategy or a real chance of effecting it,” the former ambassador said.

To be sure, he said, Netanyahu might be able to drop a right-wing party and bring in Tzipi Livni, a former foreign minister and candidate for premier who once mulled joining his government, and her centrist Kadima.

“But to do this under siege, as he (Netanyahu) feels right now, is not going to happen,” Kurtzer said.

Haim Malka, a top analyst at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), told AFP “there is no obvious or viable alternative to Netanyahu at the moment” when asked if “regime change” could work.

“And trying to trigger a reshuffling of the Israeli political landscape will more likely lead to paralysis rather than a coalition willing to make political compromises with the Palestinians,” he said.

How dare Israel build apartments on their own land! Who do they think they are? Yes, this is the reaction of the muslim faith of Obama rears its ugly head. According to Fox News, the White House is raising the stakes with Israel, calling it an “insult” and an “affront” that the Jewish nation would continue plans to build 1,600 new apartments during a construction freeze aimed at re-igniting peace talks with Palestinians.

Palestinians have not sought as part of their capital the area of northeast Jerusalem where the Jewish settlement of Ramat Shlomo resides, but the decision to announce construction plans just as Vice President Joe Biden was visiting the region led to strained meetings that continues past his return.

Biden expressed his displeasure by showing up late to a dinner with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in order to issue a statement of condemnation.

On Sunday, President Obama’s chief political adviser David Axelrod told ABC’s “This Week” that the move undermines the fragile effort to bring peace to the troubled region and called the timing of the announcement “very destructive.”

Axelrod would not say what has been discussed in diplomatic talks but suggested the decision by Israel was “calculated to undermine” peace talks with the Palestinians. He added that because Israel is a special ally to the United States “for just that very reason that was not the right way to behave.”

But White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said Netanyahu’s apology on Sunday was a “good start” to rebuild trust, but more needs to be done.

“I think what would be an even better start is coming to the table with constructive ideas for constructive and trustful dialogue about moving the peace process forward,” Gibbs said.

“There’s no doubt that events like last week weaken the trust that’s needed for both sides to come together and have honest discussions about peace in the Middle East. So there’s no doubt that that was not a bright spot for the Israeli government.”

The State Department on Friday outlined what was described as a stern 45-minute call by Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton to the prime minister. The unusually tough dressing down reportedly took Netanyahu by surprise. On Sunday he announced plans to set up a committee to review processes to ensure an embarrassment like the one with Biden doesn’t happen again.

Though Netanyahu had not included East Jerusalem in an earlier decision to halt construction for 10 months, the Jerusalem District Planning and Building committee canceled two meetings scheduled for this week after Clinton’s call, Haaretz newspaper reported Sunday.

Netanyahu Leaves White House, refuses to speak to reporters

Israel Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu left the White House Monday after a one-hour and 40-minute meeting with Obama Monday night without speaking to reporters — a rare occurrence, according to Israel National News (I bet you didn’t hear this from any American news outlet did you?).

The meeting had been grudgingly scheduled early Sunday morning by the White House just a few hours before Netanyahu was to leave for the U.S. to speak at the 2009 General Assembly of the Jewish Federations of North America. The ninth-hour appointment was a clear sign that relations between Washington and Jerusalem remain strained; Netanyahu had requested the meeting weeks ago.

Also in attendance for part of the meeting was Defense Minister Ehud Barak, National Security Council head Uzi Arad, Ambassador Michael Oren and Netanyahu adviser Yitzchak Molcho. U.S. officials included National Security Adviser General (ret.) Jim Jones, White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, Special Middle East Envoy George Mitchell and National Security Council Director for Near Eastern Affairs Dan Shapiro.

On the agenda was the issue of Iran’s galloping nuclear technology development, as well as the current paralysis in talks between Israel and the Palestinian Authority, and the claim by PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas that he is resigning in January. All three matters are being taken “very seriously” by the Prime Minister’s Office, said a spokesman.

Netanyahu had reportedly been planning to tell the president that Israel was willing to be “generous” in scaling back Jewish construction in Judea and Samaria, and “means business” about rejuvenating talks with the PA.

But the brief statement issued by the White House following the talks said simply that the two leaders discussed “how to move forward on Middle East peace.” The White House spokesman added, “The president reaffirmed our strong commitment to Israel’s security, and discussed security cooperation on a range of issues.”

Netanyahu declined to comment on his conversation with the president, and cancelled a briefing with the media he had scheduled for the next day. The prime minister departed for Paris on Tuesday morning without speaking to reporters.

According to State Department spokesman Ian Kelly, special Middle East envoy George Mitchell is not planning to return to the region anytime soon to pressure either of the parties toward further talks. It is possible that Mitchell has decided to wait until after the PA elections on January 24, when the question of who is actually leading the Palestinian Authority may be clarified.

Palestinians are now accusing U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton of undermining progress toward Mideast peace talks after she praised Israel for offering to curb some Jewish settlement construction. I say good for you Hillary, its about time you do something right! Although knowing Obama’s true feeling/attitudes towards Israel, this was probably nothing more than just lip service. After meeting Israeli and Palestinian leaders during a visit Saturday, Clinton called for an unconditional resumption of peace talks and welcomed Israel’s offer for a slowdown in settlement activity. But according to Fox News, Palestinians rejected the idea of resuming talks, reiterating their demand that Israel must first freeze all construction of Jewish settlements in the West Bank and east Jerusalem — lands they claim for a future state.

“I believe that the U.S. condones continued settlement expansion,” Palestinian government spokesman Ghassan Khatib said in a rare public chiding of Washington.

“Calling for a resumption of negotiations despite continued settlement construction doesn’t help because we have tried this way many times,” Khatib added. “Negotiations are about ending the occupation and settlement expansion is about entrenching the occupation.”

Palestinians expressed deep disappointment and frustration at Clinton’s words, which signaled a departure from past U.S. calls for a complete freeze on settlement activity.

“If America cannot get Israel to implement a settlement freeze, what chance do Palestinians have of reaching agreement with Israel on permanent status issues?” Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat said.

Similar sentiments were voiced by Jordan and Egypt, the only two Arab countries to have peace agreements with Israel. The two countries said most of the blame lay with Israel, but signaled their unhappiness with the American shift.

Jordan’s King Abdullah II traveled to Cairo for talks with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. After the meeting, a royal palace statement released in Jordan said both leaders “insisted on the need for an immediate halt of all Israeli unilateral actions, which undermine the chances of achieving peace, especially the settlement construction.”

Clinton is set to meet with Arab foreign ministers in Morocco in the coming days.

After taking office at the start of this year, President Barack Obama buoyed Palestinian hopes with his outreach to the Muslim world and an initially tough stance urging a full freeze to all settlement construction.

U.S. officials in recent days expressed to the Palestinian Authority that Obama’s is “disgusted” with Israel, according to what a top aide to PA President Mahmoud Abbas told WND in an interview. Frankly, I’m disgusted with Obama’s attitude towards Israel and his sucking up to Palestine and the muslim world

Nimr Hamad said the White House was disgusted that Israel is refusing to halt all settlement activity as a precondition for re-starting talks with the PA over the creation of a Palestinian state. “Settlement activity” refers to Jewish construction in the West Bank and eastern sections of Jerusalem.

Hamad repeated that the term “disgusted” was used more than once in recent meetings with U.S. envoys to describe the administration’s attitude toward Israel. Hamad did not name the U.S. envoys using the terminology.

Iran tests two short range missiles – more planned for Yom Kippur

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard said it successfully test-fired short-range missiles Sunday in drills meant to show Tehran is prepared to “crush” any military threat from another country.Gen. Hossein Salami, head of the Revolutionary Guard Air Force, said Iran had perfected its short range missiles to make them more accurate in tactical battlefield situations and defend the country from any attacks. More from Yahoo/AP:

“We are going to respond to any military action in a crushing manner and it doesn’t make any difference which country or regime has launched the aggression,” state media quoted Salami as saying. He said the missiles successfully hit their targets.

The tests came two days after the U.S. and its allies disclosed that Iran had been secretly developing a previously unknown underground uranium enrichment facility and warned the country it must open the nuclear site to international inspection or face harsher international sanctions.

The missiles tested weren’t the kind that can carry a nuclear warhead. Iran is developing such ballistic missiles, but the U.S. believes that effort has been slowed.

Also, according to Gateway Pundit, The Iranians announced they will conduct war games and shoot off missiles that can hit Israel during the Jewish holy day of Yom Kippur while Jews around the world are praying on, the Day of Atonement. From Israel Nation News:

Iran will conduct war games and fire missiles that can hit Israel while Jews around the world are praying on Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. The Revolutionary Guards website said that military exercises, including the simultaneous firing of missiles at targets, will begin Sunday and last for several days “to raise the deterrence capability of the Iranian armed forces.” Yom Kippur begins Sunday night.

Several months ago, Iran said it had tested a missile that could reach Israel as well as American bases in the Middle East.

The announcement regarding the planned military exercises came at the same time that the Islamic Republic revealed it is building a second uranium enrichment facility. Iranian officials added that the new site is open for inspection by the United Nations’ International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

“Allah willing, this plant will be put into operation soon, and will blind the eyes of the enemies,” Head of Supreme Leader’s Office Hojjatoleslam Mohammad Mohammadi Golpayegani said in Tehran Saturday.

Should Israel decide its time to strike Iran’s nuke sites, Saudi Arabia of all places would allow them to use their airspace. With Iran still in choas after the rigged election, I doubt Israel would attempt anything at this point. According to the Times Online (UK):

The head of Mossad, Israel’s overseas intelligence service, has assured Benjamin Netanyahu, its prime minister, that Saudi Arabia would turn a blind eye to Israeli jets flying over the kingdom during any future raid on Iran’s nuclear sites.

Earlier this year Meir Dagan, Mossad’s director since 2002, held secret talks with Saudi officials to discuss the possibility.

The Israeli press has already carried unconfirmed reports that high-ranking officials, including Ehud Olmert, the former prime minister, held meetings with Saudi colleagues. The reports were denied by Saudi officials.

“The Saudis have tacitly agreed to the Israeli air force flying through their airspace on a mission which is supposed to be in the common interests of both Israel and Saudi Arabia,” a diplomatic source said last week.

Although the countries have no formal diplomatic relations, an Israeli defence source confirmed that Mossad maintained “working relations” with the Saudis.

John Bolton, the former US ambassador to the United Nations who recently visited the Gulf, said it was “entirely logical” for the Israelis to use Saudi airspace.

From Caroline Glick, deputy editor and op-ed writer for the Jerusalem Post, comes alarming news. An expert on Arab-Israeli relations with excellent sources deep inside Netanyahu’s government, she reports that CIA chief Leon Panetta, who recently took time out from his day job (feuding with Nancy Pelosi) to travel to Israel “read the riot act” to the government warning against an attack on Iran.

More ominously, Glick reports (likely from sources high up in the Israeli government) that the Obama administration has all but accepted as irreversible and unavoidable fact that Iran will soon develop nuclear weapons. She writes, “…we have learned that the [Obama] administration has made its peace with Iran’s nuclear aspirations. Senior administration officials acknowledge as much in off-record briefings. It is true, they say, that Iran may exploit its future talks with the US to run down the clock before they test a nuclear weapon. But, they add, if that happens, the US will simply have to live with a nuclear-armed mullocracy.”

She goes on to write that the Obama administration is desperate to stop Israel from attacking Iran writing that “as far as the [Obama] administration is concerned, if Israel could just leave Iran’s nuclear installations alone, Iran would behave itself.” She notes that American officials would regard any harm to American interests that flowed from an Israeli attack on Iranian nuclear facilities as Israel’s doing, not Iran’s.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday rebuffed U.S. calls for a full settlement freeze in the occupied West Bank and vowed not to accept limits on building of Jewish enclaves within Jerusalem.

Netanyahu’s defiant stance set the stage for a possible showdown with President Barack Obama, who, in talks with the new Israeli prime minister in Washington last week, pressed for a halt to all settlement activity, including natural growth, as called for under a long-stalled peace “road map.”

“The demand for a total stop to building is not something that can be justified and I don’t think that anyone here at this table accepts it,” Netanyahu told his cabinet, referring to Jewish settlements in the West Bank, according to an official.

Netanyahu said Israel had no plans to set up any new West Bank settlements. But he told Obama, according to the official, that his government “does not accept limitations on building” within what Israel defines as its capital, the Jerusalem municipality, an area that includes Arab East Jerusalem and parts of the West Bank captured in a 1967 Middle East war.

Jew haters (especially those in San Francisco) and Iranians rejoice! There are growing indications that the US has come to terms with a nuclear-armed Teheran, two analysts told The Jerusalem Post on Tuesday.

“The Americans are in a state of mind according to which Iran has already gone nuclear,” said Dr. Mordechai Kedar of Bar-Ilan’s Begin Sadat Center for Strategic Studies.

Kedar, who served in Military Intelligence for 25 years, said US President Barack Obama was “at peace” with the idea of a nuclear Iran.

“You can tell from how the Americans talk. Look at how [US special envoy] George Mitchell talks, or how Obama talks. I don’t see them being pressured by this threat. They have shown no urgent desire to change this reality,” he added.

“Obama has given up,” Kedar said.

The Washington Times has an exclusive story regarding Hussein Obama’s efforts to curb the spread of nuclear weapons. Now he is threatening to expose and derail a 40-year-old secret U.S. agreement to shield Israel’s nuclear weapons from international scrutiny, former and current U.S. and Israeli officials and nuclear specialists say. The issue will likely come to a head when Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu meets with Mr. Obama on May 18 in Washington. Mr. Netanyahu is expected to seek assurances from Mr. Obama that he will uphold the U.S. commitment and will not trade Israeli nuclear concessions for Iranian ones.

Assistant Secretary of State Rose Gottemoeller, speaking Tuesday at a U.N. meeting on the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), said Israel should join the treaty, which would require Israel to declare and relinquish its nuclear arsenal.

Either the Washington Post “exclusive” that said the new Israeli government will not move ahead on the core issues of peace talks with the Palestinians until it sees progress in U.S. efforts to stop Iran’s nuke program, or Jerusalem Post, which actually quoted Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon saying the Washington Post’s story is false according to Yid with a Lid. I’d like the liberal biased Washington Post Bibi story to be true, but like most things, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

As if you couldn’t see this coming from the closet muslim Obama administration anyway. Vice President Dan Quayle. Err Joe Biden tells CNN that the government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would be ‘ill advised’ to try to strike Iranian nuclear facilities. From the LA Times:

Reporting from Washington — Vice President Joe Biden issued a high-level admonishment to Israel’s new government Tuesday that it would be “ill advised” to launch a military strike against Iran.

Biden said in a CNN interview that he does not believe newly installed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would take such a step. Even so, his comment underscored a gap between the conservative new Israeli government and the Obama White House on a series of questions, including the Israeli-Palestinian peace process and Iran.

You could see the muslim faith of Obama coming from a mile away. Those of you who will be surprised by this really shouldn’t be. According to Israel Today:

A former top US intelligence official warns that the Obama Administration is about to break America’s long ties of friendship with Israel, and maybe even take steps toward the dissolution of the Jewish state.

Speaking on condition of anonymity to Douglas Hagmann of the Northeast Intelligence Network, the source said:

“I have every reason to believe, based on what I’ve seen at my level of [security] clearance especially over the last several years, that Israel will soon be completely on their own… or worse.”

He went on to note that the betrayal likely won’t happen in one dramatic moment, but rather subtly, behind the scenes, and over the course of several years.

The Obama Administration is preparing to “provide more support to Arab countries [with] financial and military aid, undercutting Israel’s defense efforts all while pushing Israel to succumb to the pressure of unreasonable demands designed to end with their political annihilation as a nation,” said the source.

Israeli officials have of late noted a marked increase in the pressure from Washington to more rapidly acquiesce to Arab land-for-peace demands, and US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has clarified that Washington is none to pleased with incoming Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s refusal to commit to the creation of a sovereign Palestinian Arab state with Jerusalem as its capital.

Israel has launched a covert war against Iran as an alternative to direct military strikes against Tehran’s nuclear program, US intelligence sources have revealed. It is using hitmen, sabotage, front companies and double agents to disrupt the regime’s illicit weapons project, the experts say. The most dramatic element of the “decapitation” program is the planned assassination of top figures involved in Iran’s atomic operations. Despite fears in Israel and the US that Iran is approaching the point of no return in its ability to build atom bomb, Israeli officials are aware of the change in mood in Washington since President Barack Obama took office. They privately acknowledge the new US administration is unlikely to sanction an air attack on Iran’s nuclear installations and Mr Obama’s offer to extend a hand of peace to Tehran puts any direct military action beyond reach for now.

The aim is to slow down or interrupt Iran’s research program, without the gamble of a direct confrontation that could lead to a wider war.

A former CIA officer on Iran told The Daily Telegraph: “Disruption is designed to slow progress on the programme, done in such a way that they don’t realise what’s happening. You are never going to stop it.

Obama Bin Laden, still afraid to show his ugly mug, or the “health” condition he’s in released an audio tape today calling for all muslims to go Jihad against Israel. The tape is the usual BS from Bin Laden, nothing new, nothing earth shattering. Have fun Barack, just yet another issue the Messiah will magically fix. The original Islamist One-Note Osama urges jihad against Israel for the 437th time, and condemned Arab governments who recognize Israel for the 436th time:

Al-Qaida chief Osama bin Laden urged Muslims to launch a jihad against Israel and condemned Arab governments as allies of the Jewish state in a new message aimed at harnessing anger in the Mideast over the Gaza offensive.

Bin Laden spoke in an audiotape posted Wednesday on Islamic militant Web sites where al-Qaida usually issues its messages. It was his first tape since May and came nearly three weeks after Israel started its campaign against Gaza’s militant Hamas rulers.

“There is only one strong way to bring the return of Al-Aqsa and Palestine, and that is jihad in the path of God,” bin Laden said in the 22-minute audiotape, referring to the revered Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. “The duty is to urge people to jihad and to enlist the youth into jihad brigades.” …

The tape, entitled “Call for jihad to stop the aggression on Gaza,” was played over a still picture of bin Laden and the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem’s Old City, one of Islam’s holiest sites. But there were no English subtitles and flashy production effects that usually accompany such messages.

I guess they even hate their own. Now what would happen if some right wing protesters against Obama’s policy on any issue burnt an Obama flag here in the states? You’d pry have riots, 24/7 news coverages of how the evil right is right, etc. But when hardline Iranian demonstrators shout slogans as posters of U.S. President-elect Barack Obama are run over by cars and burnt, during a demonstration in support of the people of Gaza, in front of the Swiss Embassy in Tehran no one here in the states seems to have any sort of problem with it. I’m obviously missing something here as to why this is perceived to be all fine and dandy and not worthy of much news coverage, especially since its the Messiah. Also, why exactly are the braindead Iranians doing this in front of the SWISS Embassy? Is Barack Obama suddenly a Switzerland citizen? Well, theres still a week left to blame Booosh i guess.
