The leader of Lebanon’s governing pro-Western coalition has claimed victory over a Hezbollah-led bloc in a tight parliamentary election, accoeding to the BBC. Saad Hariri said his 14 March alliance would retain its majority in the 128-member parliament. Breath a sigh of relief for now.
Obama throws Israel under the bus
Jew haters (especially those in San Francisco) and Iranians rejoice! There are growing indications that the US has come to terms with a nuclear-armed Teheran, two analysts told The Jerusalem Post on Tuesday.
“The Americans are in a state of mind according to which Iran has already gone nuclear,” said Dr. Mordechai Kedar of Bar-Ilan’s Begin Sadat Center for Strategic Studies.
Kedar, who served in Military Intelligence for 25 years, said US President Barack Obama was “at peace” with the idea of a nuclear Iran.
“You can tell from how the Americans talk. Look at how [US special envoy] George Mitchell talks, or how Obama talks. I don’t see them being pressured by this threat. They have shown no urgent desire to change this reality,” he added.
“Obama has given up,” Kedar said.
Obama denied and embarassed by his own democratic controlled Senate, AND a Federal Judge on Gitmo
Michelle Malkin has all the details of the stories breaking today. The Senate amendment scrapping funding for Obama’s Gitmo closure has just been passed by 90-6. The decision represents a potentially serious setback for Obama, who as a candidate vowed to close Gitmo and signed an executive order beginning the process soon after he took office. Also today a federal judge rules that the US can continueindefinite detention of enemy combatants. U.S. District Judge John Bates’ opinion issued Tuesday night limited the Obama administration’s definition of who can be held. But he said Congress in the days after Sept. 11, 2001 gave the president the authority to hold anyone involved in planning, aiding or carrying out the terrorist attacks. NY Times’ Maureen Dowd pulls a Joe Biden and plagiarizes Talking Points Memo’s Josh Marshall!
Democrats don’t pay taxes, and they can’t write anything without copying someone else’s words apparently. Maureen Dowd of the New York Times wrote this today:

On Thursday, May 14th, 2009, John Marshall wrote this in an article at Talking Points Memo:

Notice the similarities? All Dowd changed from Marshall’s article were the words “we were” to “the Bush crowd was”.

Apparently Rasmussen who WAS one of the few none cowardly European politicians who refused to give in to pressure from fundamentalists in the Middle East, has changed his mind about this subject purely for political gains. 17-year-old girl flogged in Pakistan!
Oh excuse me… “Palk-EE-Stahn”. Here is another example of the wonderful, “religion of peace” that is Islam. According to Michelle Malkin, a 17-year-old girl was publicly flogged by the Taliban in Pakistan’s Swat Valley after her neighbor accused her of adultery. So who helped with the flogging? Why none other than her own brother who held her down as the Muslim adultery police whipped her. Malkin’s post did continue a Youtube video on this incident, but it looks like the censorship police at Youtube got rid of it. And also, according to the Guardian UK:
Reached by phone, Taliban spokesman Muslim Khan claimed responsibility for the flogging. “She came out of her house with another guy who was not her husband, so we must punish her. There are boundaries you cannot cross,” he said. He defended the Taliban’s right to thrash women shoppers who were inappropriately dressed, saying it was permitted under Islamic law.

It was just three days ago that Obama strongly hinted that he would order American troops into Pakistan. Well so much for that idea. In yet another Obama flip flop, he tells the AP that he respects Pakistan’s sovereignty and foresaw no reason to violate it. Or do I call it POLK-EE-STAN now?

Sayyid Imam al-Sharif, who goes by the nom de guerre Dr Fadl, helped bin Laden create al-Qaeda and then led an Islamist insurgency in Egypt in the 1990s.
But in a book written from inside an Egyptian prison, he has launched a frontal attack on al-Qaeda’s ideology and the personal failings of bin Laden and particularly his Egyptian deputy, Ayman al-Zawahiri.
Twenty years ago, Dr Fadl became al-Qaeda’s intellectual figurehead with a crucial book setting out the rationale for global jihad against the West.
Today, however, he believes the murder of innocent people is both contrary to Islam and a strategic error. “Every drop of blood that was shed or is being shed in Afghanistan and Iraq is the responsibility of bin Laden and Zawahiri and their followers,” writes Dr Fadl.

If such a quantity were further enriched it could produce more than 20kg of fissile material – enough for a bomb.
“It appears that Iran has walked right up to the threshold of having enough low enriched uranium to provide enough raw material for a single bomb,” said Peter Zimmerman, a former chief scientist of the US Arms Control and Disarmament Agency The new figures come in a report from the International Atomic Energy Agency, the UN’s nuclear watchdog, released on Thursday. This revealed that Iran’s production of low enriched uranium had previously been underestimated.

The Commerce Department has not confirmed the approval. Boeing, however, acknowledged that Commerce approved an export license for Syria on Feb. 2.
The sources said the approval by Commerce marked a departure from nearly five years of sanctions by the outgoing Bush administration. Under the Syrian Accountability Act, Syria was to be denied all but food and humanitarian supplies from the United States. Bush aides said Syria had used passenger jets to ferry weapons from Iran to Hizbullah in Lebanon.

Despite fears in Israel and the US that Iran is approaching the point of no return in its ability to build atom bomb, Israeli officials are aware of the change in mood in Washington since President Barack Obama took office. They privately acknowledge the new US administration is unlikely to sanction an air attack on Iran’s nuclear installations and Mr Obama’s offer to extend a hand of peace to Tehran puts any direct military action beyond reach for now.
The aim is to slow down or interrupt Iran’s research program, without the gamble of a direct confrontation that could lead to a wider war.

As Feb. 14 approaches, the police begin inspecting gift shops for items that are red or are intended as gifts to mark the holiday — a celebration of St. Valentine, a 3rd century Christian martyr — which is banned in Saudi Arabia. Such items are legal at other times of the year, but as Valentine’s Day nears they become contraband.
At best, shops caught selling Valentine’s gifts are ordered to get rid of them. Some salesmen have been detained for days.
The Valentine’s Day prohibition is in line with the ascetic Wahhabi school of Islam that the kingdom follows. Marking Christian holidays is banned in Saudi Arabia, the birthplace of Islam and a country where non-Muslims are banned from openly practicing their religion.
Celebrating any holidays but the two most important for Muslims — Eid al-Adha and Eid al-Fitr_ is taboo because they are considered “religious innovations” that Islam does not sanction. Even birthdays and Mother’s Day are frowned on by the religious establishment.
As Feb. 14 approaches, newspapers reprint a fatwa or religious edict issued by scholars a few years ago, declaring “eid al-hob,” Arabic for the feast of love, a “Christian, pagan feast” that Muslims should not celebrate. The Pentagon’s senior judge overseeing terror trials at Guantanamo Bay dropped charges Thursday against an al-Qaida suspect in the 2000 USS Cole bombing, upholding President Barack Obama’s order to freeze military tribunals there. The charges against suspected al-Qaida bomber Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri marked the last active Guantanamo war crimes case.
The legal move by Susan J. Crawford, the top legal authority for military trials at Guantanamo, brings all cases into compliance with Obama’s Jan. 22 executive order to halt terrorist court proceedings at the U.S. Navy base in Cuba.
Pentagon spokesman Geoff Morrell said Crawford dismissed the charges against al-Nashiri without prejudice. That means new charges can be brought again later. He will remain in prison for the time being.
“It was her decision, but it reflects the fact that the president has issued an executive order which mandates that the military commissions be halted, pending the outcome of several reviews of our operations down at Guantanamo,” Morrell said late Thursday night.
The ruling also gives the White House time to review the legal cases of all 245 terror suspects held there and decide whether they should be prosecuted in the U.S. or released to other nations.
